BMW R 71 was the Icon of BMW

from Motorworld by V.Sheyanov

The first thing I want to write: R71 is the legendary BMW top model with a 750cc side-valve engine which became the basis for the Soviet military M72, which distant successor of which is still being produced (*in China). And this statement should be the end of the article. But “the devil is in the detail”. The German BMW R71 motorcycle, presented to the public at the1938 motorcycle exhibition in Berlin remained an “unattainable standard” for its Soviet counterpart.

Serial production of the R71 motorcycle was launched in 1938 and lasted only 3 years, until 1941. Technically difficult, the R71 gave the impression of a very simple machine – thanks to the high-quality standards and the tremendous work that BMW engineers and designers put into the new line of their motorcycles.

In the military training camps of the Wehrmacht, we could find both models – the simpler BMW R12, which had been in service for several years, and the conditionally “tourist” R71, which was equipped with a more perfect and lighter frame with variable section tubes, soft rear suspension, and more powerful 22 hp engine with a compression ratio of 5.5:1. Nevertheless, despite the obvious advantages, the R71 didn’t become a bestseller. The army needed a low production cost instead of a machine with a high-class manufacturing accuracy and one of the most advanced, but expensive frames on the market offering high comfort.

The BMW R71 became the last side-valve motorcycle in the history of the Bavarian brand and the last one that could be equipped with a hand gear lever at the request of the buyer.
A total of 3 458 R71 motorcycles were produced, most of which were destroyed in the war.

footnote: The Ural, now being manufactured in Kazakhstan (2022) as a sidecar rig is a direct descendant of the old R71!

Legend

The UnReAL Adventure Ride. The photo of Kirill’s bike at the border says it all! Pity the website of their travels went down, it would have made a great book, equal with the likes of Jupiter’s Travels. Hell I’d buy a copy!

Historical photos

The first motorcycle races in Serpukhov near Moscow took place in the summer of 1936. It was a linear race 1 kilometer from the start, from the start the race was to set speed records. The start was given in the village of Novye Kuzmenki go Serpukhov (there is now a shop in this place). The racers started one or two and raced towards Moscow. They finished outside the village of Volosovo (now it’s Go Chekhov) at the airport turn. There used to be a sculpture of a moose. By the way, spectators standing by the highway prevented the forest giants (not rare then) from going out on the road. Participant camp was at the airfield.
The main judge of the motoraces was the renowned pilot Valery Pavlovich Chkalov, who at that time was just perfecting the bombing skills at the Serpukhov Aviation School.

Ice racing

Ice speedway is a developed form of motorcycle speedway racing, featuring racing on frozen surfaces. The sport uses bikes enhanced for the terrain. Participants can compete at international level.

The majority of Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme sanctioned team and individual meetings are held in Russia, Sweden and Finland, but events are also held in the Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands, and occasionally other countries. Countries that dominated and won the majority of titles in Individual Ice Racing World Championship (held since 1966) and Team Ice Racing World Championship (held since 1979) were the USSR and since 1991—Russia.

Nikolay Krasnikov is a Russian twenty times ice speedway world champion. Krasnikov won eight consecutive Individual Ice Speedway World Championship titles from 2005 until 2012 and twelve Team Ice Racing World Championship titles with Russia from 2004 until 2016. He is regarded as one of the leading ice speedway riders of all-time.
